Frequently Asked Questions

How do Schlage and Kwikset smart locks compare in security ratings?

Schlage models generally achieve the highest residential security rating of BHMA Grade 1 or AAA, while Kwikset smart deadbolts often hold Grade AAA or Grade 2 ratings depending on the model. Both brands provide robust protection against physical attacks, but Schlage units feature heavier internal metal gears and built-in forced entry alarms. Kwikset counters with its patented SmartKey cylinder that resists advanced lock picking and lets homeowners re-key the physical cylinder in seconds without calling a locksmith.

Will a smart lock fit my standard exterior door without redrilling?

Yes, both brands design their smart deadbolts to fit standard American exterior doors right out of the box. The hardware supports standard door thicknesses ranging from 1-3/8 inches to 1-3/4 inches alongside adjustable backsets for 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch boreholes. Installing these units typically requires only a Phillips screwdriver, making them great DIY upgrades alongside reliable wireless video doorbells that also mount without complicated wiring.

What happens if the smart deadbolt batteries die while you are away?

Physical key override cylinders and advance low-battery app alerts prevent unexpected lockouts. Most smart deadbolts from Schlage and Kwikset include traditional physical keys, while standalone electronic levers like the Kwikset SmartCode 917 operate on long-lasting 9V batteries with multi-year life spans. The associated mobile apps send low-battery push notifications weeks before power depletes so you have plenty of time to swap in fresh alkaline AA batteries.

Does the Best Schlage Kwikset Smart Lock require a dedicated smart home hub?

No, popular models like the Schlage Encode and Kwikset Halo feature integrated Wi-Fi adapters that communicate directly with your home router. You can control guest access, check activity logs, and lock or unlock the deadbolt remotely via smartphone without buying a separate bridge or hub. These locks also integrate directly with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home for seamless voice commands and departure automations.

How do exterior keypads and touchscreens perform in freezing winter weather?

Illuminated touchscreens and backlit physical buttons operate reliably in sub-zero temperatures and humid environments. Premium models feature fingerprint-resistant capacitive touchscreens that prevent strangers from guessing your numeric code by studying oily smudge patterns on the glass. Auto-lock delay timers in the companion app can also be adjusted during winter months to accommodate slight seasonal door shifting caused by weatherstripping expansion.

Can you manage temporary guest codes for rental guests or service workers?

Yes, both systems support extensive access code scheduling through their mobile applications. Kwikset Halo accommodates up to 250 unique user codes, while the Schlage Encode series stores up to 100 codes with customizable schedules, temporary durations, or one-touch recurring access. Property managers can instantly revoke credentials from their phone, keeping entry secure without ever hiding brass keys under doormats or coordinating physical key handoffs.
